What is Dysport?

Dysport is an injection containing abobotulinumtoxinA (Botulinum toxin type A). AbobotulinumtoxinA is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity.

Dysport is also used to treat muscle spasms and stiffness (spasticity) of the arms, hands, legs, and feet in adults and children at least 2 years old. This medicine will not treat spasticity caused by cerebral palsy.

Dysport is also used to temporarily lessen the appearance of facial wrinkles.

What is a Dysport injection?

Even if you know nothing about Dysport, you’ve likely heard of Botox. Dysport is very similar to Botox. Both of these neurotoxins are used to treat fine lines and facial wrinkles.

First approved by the FDA in 2009, Dypsort has been proven to be an effective and non-invasive cosmetic procedure. Like Botox, its active ingredient is Botulinum Type A.

Once Dysport has been injected, it disables the nerves near the injection site. It smoothes out and relaxes the skin and limits muscle movement. This prevents the creation or deepening of forehead wrinkles usually caused by your facial expressions. Although this might sound terrifying, this procedure is incredibly safe and mostly pain-free.

Most treatments require three to five small injections into the facial muscles for the best results. No local anesthetic is required, and these injections are almost painless! The best part? Most Dysport treatments take around 15 minutes to complete.

How long does Dysport last?

If you’re considering Dysport injections to reduce the appearance of your frown lines, then you’ll want to know how long the treatment will last. Typically injections last between 12 and 16 weeks. However, exactly how long your results last will depend on you as an individual.

To maintain the results of your injections, you’ll need around 3 or 4 sessions a year.

How effective is Dysport?

Dysport is becoming more and more popular, but does it work?

A 2019 clinical study found that Dysport was effective at temporarily removing frown lines in over80% of participants

However, the effectiveness of Dysport also relies on the patient. To get the most out of your Dysport injections and see the best results, it’s important to follow any before and aftercare advice given to you by the clinician.

It’s also important to note that each patient and their skin/muscles are different. For example, what may work for one patient may not show much difference for another. Meaning one patient may see amazing results from smaller amounts of Dysport than another.

What are Dysport’s side effects?

According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, side effects of Dysport are rare. However, some people may experience the following:

  • Mild bruising
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Muscle weakness
  • Facial asymmetry

Dermatologists can use thinner needles to help reduce these side effects and prevent soreness at the injection site.

After your Dysport procedure, you must follow the post-treatment instructions given by your clinician to ensure you get the best possible results and reduce the likelihood of side effects.

How much does Dysport cost?

Giving an average price for Dysport injections can be difficult because the total cost will depend on how many units of Dysport are used.

Dysport vs. Botox

Dysport and Botox are very similar: they’re both non-invasive, non-surgical procedures with little to no downtime. Both neurotoxins last around 3-4 months, and you’ll need regular treatments to maintain your results.

However, there are some key differences. Botox is usually used to treat smaller areas, as once injected, it stays within the injection area. However, Dysport is preferred for larger areas, such as your forehead, because it spreads further. Also, Botox is usually slightly more expensive than Dysport.

If you want more information about which neurotoxin is right for you, check out our blog, ‘Dysport vs. Botox’.

You should not receive Dysport if you are allergic to botulinum toxinor cow's milk, or if you have an infection, swelling, or muscle weakness in the area where the medicine will be injected.

One treatment is usually all it takes to see the result of Botox. However, if your wrinkles are profound, you may require more Botox than the average dose to erase them. In addition, Botox is not a permanent solution, so you will need to repeat the treatment every three to four months or when you start to see your lines and wrinkles reemerging.

Botox is a quick treatment to perform and can be done in 15 minutes or less (if you require numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable, allot some additional time). The results of Botox last about three to four months despite how much Botox is injected into the treatment area.

Botox is a safe and widely used cosmetic treatment to improve the common signs of aging. Some patients experience minimal redness, dryness, bruising, or swelling at the injection site, which resolves within a few hours.

To limit the incidence of bruising, avoid drinking any alcoholic beverages the day before your Botox appointment. You’ll also want to avoid taking blood thinners for two weeks before your appointment for the same purpose. Also, aspirin and certain supplements and vitamins, like vitamin E, fish oil, ginseng, and St. John's Wort, should be avoided.

After Botox, apply an ice pack to the area to reduce any potential swelling. You'll want to take it easy after your Botox appointment, so avoid heavy lifting or manual labor and sit upright for at least six hours.
You can resume your regular skincare routine right away. And if there's any bruising, you can cover it up with makeup.
